Why You Need a Wedding Planner (Even if you think you don’t)

flowers-desk-office-vintageWedding planning is a stressful business. According to Forbes.com, event planners rank 8th in the top 10 most stressful jobs (just below military, police officers and firefighters). It’s easy to think you can do it all on your own, and many people do. But if you have the option, here is a great article written by a bride who chose not to go the wedding planner route and wished she had for many reasons, including:

  • Weddings aren’t always fun.
  • Wedding planning is stressful.
  • Wedding planners have more experience choosing vendors.
  • Wedding planning takes time.
  • Things do go wrong at the last minute (and you don’t want to be the one putting out fires on your wedding day).
  • Wedding planners can actually help you with your budget.

Reading Challenge: August 2015

Reading Challenge ImageFirst things first, my original reading challenge blog was posted to my What Heather Thinks blog and you can see past posts there! I decided to move this one over to Happy Heather so any future updates can be found here. Now that that’s taken care of let’s move on to what I read in August and how the challenge is coming!

How To Be A Good WifeHow to Be A Good Wife by Emma Chapman

I could not put this book down. It’s a psychological thriller about a woman named Marta who begins to have visions of a blonde girl no one else can see. Throughout the story the reader has to figure out if Marta is remembering repressed memories after going off a medication she has taken for years or if she’s losing her mind. I read this in two sittings and less than 24 hours.

The Culture SecretThe Culture Secret: How to Empower People and Companies No Matter What You Sell by David Vik

It’s no secret, I’m a bit of a culture nerd. I love finding ways to improve company culture and advocate for employees. I picked this one up purely because of the title but was really excited when I found out that the author used to work for Zappos which has a reputation for amazing culture. I would advise not reading this before bed, I got all kinds of inspired and wanted to take notes so it wasn’t the best way to wind down at the end of the day.

And unfortunately that’s all I was able to complete in August. I did start another book called The Forgotten Garden which I’m really enjoying but it’s really long so I couldn’t finish it in the month. I’ll tell you more about it in my September update!

Goal Standings

21/35 total books (three behind, I’ve got to pick things up!)
2/5 Happy Books
2/5 Business Books
2/5 Biographies

Looks like I need to get caught up on my goals!

My Favorites: All the Smells

FavoritesMy favorites this week are both scents! First in a nontraditional sense. My washing machine was smelling HORRIBLE! So I decided to figure out how to clean it. Turns out, front loading washing machines get really moldy/mildewy. Gross. I found this amazing article on Pinterest to help me clean up mine and now it smells fresh, clean and like bleach (which is a good thing)! Not just that, I bought new laundry detergent that smells fantastic so my bathroom (where the laundry is) is very fragrant now in a good way!

Secondly, I broke out the fall Scentsy scents this weekend with some Carrot Cake scented wax and my apartment now smells amazing. Between these great smells and the nice weather that had my windows open all weekend, I’m a happy camper.

I’m also still in the throws of Veronica Mars and am obsessed. I love it and I can’t wait to watch the movie when I’m caught up with the series. I have been good and haven’t caught too many spoilers, but I’m Team Logan all the way!

10 Reasons You Should Invest in Fun

happyrunningLife is full of stress. Whether it’s the pressures of work, driving in traffic, or not getting enough sleep, the stress we face on a daily basis is endless. More often than not, our leisure time is filled with zoning out in front of the TV, computer or mobile devices instead of indulging in play. The acts of laughing, smiling and having fun boost positivity and can actually make us live longer! Here are a few more reasons why we should invest in having fun.

Prolonged stress can put your health at risk from:
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Digestive problems
  • Heart disease
  • Insomnia and other sleep issues
  • Weight gain
Aside from avoiding these negative side affects, the benefits of having more fun include:
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improved memory, problem solving and mental health
  • Fuel for your imagination and creativity
  • Fun fosters empathy, compassion, trust and intimacy with others
  • Every time you smile your body releases endorphins!

For all of these reasons, we should make time for pure fun every day! But what does it mean to invest in fun?

To invest means to use, give or devote (money, time , talent, etc.), by purchase or expenditure, in something offering potential profitable returns. I think we can all agree the benefits of fun can be considered a profitable return. Here are some examples of how to invest in having fun:

  • Host a regular game night with friends
  • Organize a night out or happy hour with colleagues
  • Play with your pets
  • Share jokes with friends or coworkers
  • Go for a bike ride or hike with your spouse

Devote time to playing in your leisure time, take your stress levels down a notch, and start living a happier and healthier life!
